The Energy Transition team develops and delivers initiatives to ensure the secure operation of the NSW power system at up to 100% instantaneous renewable supply, including delivering system security services and supporting the operability of the grid. We explore how new technologies and innovations can be deployed on the grid. The Energy Transition team is heavily focused on delivering solutions to maintain the system strength of the NSW power system. We have identified that a diverse portfolio solutions is required in the coming decade, including synchronous condensers, up to 5GW of grid-forming batteries, modifications to synchronous machines and contracts with hydro, gas and coal assets. Our work is varied and creative - there's no rulebook for what we do. About the opportunity Are you an engineer passionate about enabling the rapid transformation of Australia's electricity system? Do you have a creative mindset, strong communication skills and a keen interest in electricity system innovation and new technologies? As the Engineer in the Energy Transition team, you will make creative and technical contributions to support the investigation and deployment of technologies and services to maintain a secure power system as we transition towards 100% instantaneous renewables. Support the delivery of system security services as coal generators retire and we transition to renewable energy. You will help guide power system modelling (in PSSE and PSCAD) and market modelling (in PLEXOS) to identify the optimal portfolio of solutions to maintain the system strength of the NSW power system. Support technical and commercial feasibility assessments of synchronous machine modifications and grid forming batteries for system strength. Engage with 'non-network' proponents (including NSW's largest existing generators and dozens of grid-forming battery proponents). Support the delivery of Transgrid's System Security Roadmap, developing and implementing infrastructure, services, tools and systems to enable the secure operation of our network at up to 100% instantaneous renewable energy. Prepare business cases and economic justification to support regulatory approvals and capital investment decisions for infrastructure and services required to deliver the energy transition. Undertake analysis to draw insights from large sets of data. Investigate future power system trends and opportunities, such as distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, renewable energy zones, and assess its implications on the transition of the power system. You will prepare research and thought leadership, and engage with industry stakeholders. Monitor technological, market and policy developments in the National Electricity Market and beyond. About you Technical experience in the electricity industry, ideally with electricity generation and/or new technologies such as grid-forming batteries. A creative and collaborative approach - eager to learn and guide the planning of the 'electricity system of the future'. A strong communicator and an effective writer. Knowledge of the National Electricity Market including rules, regulations and government policies. Display analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills. Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, including Engineering and Commerce degrees.
