Our team based in Melbourne is primarily focused on supporting the Australian Department of Defence and Defence industry portfolio in enhancing the survivability of Maritime, Land and Air Platforms. We also offer complimentary services in our Protective Design and Security portfolio offering for a range of government clients covering the design and protection of infrastructure. The Melbourne team operates a unique range of Test and Evaluation (T&E) capabilities including our in-house Medium Weight Shock Testing Machine (JASSO) and operation of Defence’s heavy weight shock barge for Maritime systems qualification. The team specialises in a range of advanced analysis Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) services in the areas of Blast, Shock and Ballistics as well as conducting a range of consulting work around the survivability of Defence Platforms and infrastructure. We also work closely with our Perth-based team as well as some of Thornton Tomasetti’s offices in the UK and US supporting a wider range of clients. The Role We have an opportunity for an Engineer Intern to join our Applied Science team in Melbourne during Summer 2024. Responsibilities The role will include supporting engineering and design analysis for a variety of projects ranging from programming through consulting assignments, under the supervision of one of our experienced professionals. Depending on the projects ongoing at the time of the placement, assignments may include: Numerical modelling (e.g. blast modelling, shock modelling of naval equipment); Test and evaluation support (e.g. shock testing of naval equipment); Coding (e.g. software development, data mining and processing, application of machine learning techniques); Risk assessments; Coordination and preparation of internal documentation and calculation packs to support internal quality reviews. Specific projects will be tailored to an individual student’s skill set. Qualifications Undergraduate or graduate student with a focus in mechanical, aerospace or structural engineering, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, naval architecture, or related fields. Strong academic record. Experience in programming is helpful but not required.
