Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) Full-time (100%), permanent/fixed-term position for up to 12 months Base salary will be in the range $ 91,658.60 - $ 98,330.37 17% Superannuation (HEW Level 6) Based at our vibrant St Lucia Campus About This Opportunity Join our fermentation team as a Senior Scientific Officer - Bioprocess Engineer, to contribute to the assembly, operation and management of bioreactors. Apply your subject matter expertise and advanced knowledge of bioreactor engineering, bioreaction engineering, bioprocess development and scale up to the Integrated Design Environment for Advanced biomanufacturing team. The position involves hands on laboratory work to test and set up instrumented bioreactors, as well as the development of an efficient framework to test components and build new designs. You will work closely with our Senior Bioprocess Engineer to manage, test, validate and operate bioreactors, implement fermentation strategies to characterise microbial strains. You will also work with a range of different stakeholders, including vendors, clients, collaborators and students. Key responsibilities will include: Core Scientific Integrate new components and set up instrumented bioreactors under the supervision of our Senior fermentation Engineer. Set up instrumented bioreactors and control software as required. In coordination with our senior Bioprocess engineer and Fermentation scientists, design, plan and perform fermentations following the current workflows to deliver high quality data to clients In coordination with our senior Bioprocess Engineer, assist in the development and implementation of novel fermentation strategies Implement a structured maintenance schedule for bioreactors and probes/sensors Under the supervision of our senior Bioprocess Engineer, design, plan, set up, monitor, and report the operation of bioreactors Maintain accurate records of experiments or technical activities and results/outcomes Assist with the development of research/analytical protocols Contribute to research outputs Assist with designing fermentation projects When required, present research outputs in regular meeting and to different stakeholders Implement standards and controls to achieve consistently reliable outputs Perform standard maintenance on instruments to ensure optimal performance General Assist in the day-to-day activities and operations of the centre/team/facility Build new and/or improve existing research-focused engineering technologies, systems, prototypes, machines and/or processes Perform other duties as reasonably directed by the Research Facilities Manager Represent IDEA Bio at networking events as reasonably directed by the Research Facilities Manager Safety Ensure a high standard of occupational health and safety standards and systems, including inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, administration of research Facilities, Inventories, reporting and investigating injuries, incidents and hazards Assist with developing a proactive safety culture and implement continuous improvement Leadership and management Support and/or lead the development of more junior research engineers, scientists, and technicians ​ About UQ As part of the UQ community, you will have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world. Previous experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing bioprocess systems Proficiency in bioprocessing software and simulation tools Demonstrated laboratory skills (media and buffer preparation, sample preparation, implementation of experimental protocols, use of volumetric materials, etc) Comprehensive understanding of fermentation processes. Sound understanding on the principles of bioreactor design and operation Excellent level communication skills Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to troubleshoot issues with bioprocess equipment and processes Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct documentation. Strong expertise in the Microsoft Office suite of programs, GraphPad Prism, and the ability to learn new programs (e.g., LabArchives, BioRender). Completion of relevant postgraduate degree (masters, PhD) in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology or relevant discipline Knowledge of scale up strategies and downstream bioprocesses.
