Systems Engineer — Melbourne, Melbourne Region

The Role We are seeking an experienced Infrastructure and Systems Engineer to join an IT Infrastructure team on a temporary contract basis. You will play a critical role in ensuring servers, network, and cloud infrastructure operate efficiently and securely, supporting Council's digital strategy and daily operations. Key Responsibilities Manage and maintain IT infrastructure, including Windows Servers (2016/2019/2022), VMware, Active Directory, Exchange, Citrix, virtual servers, and SANs. Monitor network availability, system performance, and security to provide a reliable and secure technology environment. Implement and review system administrative functions, including backups, disaster recovery, and change management procedures. Provide 3rd-level helpdesk support for database systems, network, and PC applications. Design and evaluate infrastructure solutions and contribute to architecture standards. Assist with policy development, capacity planning, and system enhancements. Collaborate with internal teams and external providers to ensure seamless service delivery. What We’re Looking For Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience). Proven experience managing network and server infrastructure in a multi-site environment. Expertise with Windows Server environments, VMware, Microsoft 365 suite (including SCCM, SCOM), and Active Directory. Solid understanding of network connectivity, security best practices, and disaster recovery planning. Familiarity with scripting languages such as PowerShell, VBScript, or command line tools is an advantage. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and collaborate effectively across teams. Why Work With Them?
