The Opportunity The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work. The Natural Systems Modelling Group at CSIRO’s Data61 is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge computational models to support a range of relevant stakeholders in government and industry in their efforts to combat natural disasters and climate change. Our mission is to harness the power of data and technology to create models that aid in disaster response, preparedness, adaptation and mitigation. We collaborate closely with a range of relevant stakeholders to design and implement innovative solutions that make a real difference in our communities. We are seeking a talented software engineer passionate about providing ongoing support to our research teams to ensure the development of high quality, robust and maintainable software that deliver trusted solutions to the community. In this role you will be responsible for maintaining and further developing several of our software products, working in close collaboration with scientists to understand end-users’ requirements and implement relevant solutions. Your duties will include: Under general direction, contribute to research and/or technology through the development of original and adapted experimental methods, equipment or software. Undertake a wide variety of tasks or tasks with a high degree of specialisation. Show initiative to seek new approaches to meet experimental or technological needs when encountering new problems where methods are not defined. Participate in the identification and definition of research and/or technological problems with colleagues. Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction. Address problems promptly and in a constructive manner. Participate in planning projects and accept responsibility for scheduling and completion of major parts of the project, including evaluation of options, experimental design, data collection and analysis, user and customer research, user experience and/or software design, implementation and delivery, Make significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of research or technological results and may collaborate on drafting presentations to, and/or detailed written reports for, clients and the scientific and/or technology community. Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation. Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives. Location: Melbourne, VIC Salary: AU$ 89,680 - AU$101,459 plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Indefinite Reference: 95556 To be considered you will need: Essential Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed. Please address these essential criteria carefully in cover letter. An undergraduate/postgraduate degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or relevant equivalent experience. Demonstrable extensive experience in several programming languages with a strong preference for C++, Python and/or JavaScript. Experience with contemporary software development tools and practises: version control, unit testing, automated testing, issue tracking. Strong problem-solving skills in the context of software engineering with a proven ability to effectively approach complex problems autonomously. An ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team environment comprising of people with skill sets in Software Engineering, UX/UI, Product Development, Computational Modelling and Machine Learning and Climate and Agricultural Science. Demonstrable project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritise, and meet deadlines. An ability to communicate effectively to an internal and external audience that may not always be technical in nature. Desirable Experience in front-end development using tools such as JavaScript, Angular or React. Demonstrable experience in API development. Demonstrable experience in web application development as well as strong understanding of cloud computing.
